Frequently Asked Questions

What is a virtual desktop or workstation?

Think of a Virtual Desktop as a PC that runs in the cloud. You have a screen, keyboard and mouse in your office (along with any other peripheral you need) and they connect to the cloud based PC. You see your normal desktop; your mouse moves as it always did, and you type normally. The beauty is that as you make changes, they are backed up in real time so you never lose data. When you sign off at the end of the day, your data is secure in the cloud. If you need to work from somewhere else, you can – from any device.

Is a virtual computer safe?

Virtual Workstations are VERY secure. Your data is always backed up, is always being monitored for malware of any kind, and your access to the virtual machine uses the latest 256 bit encrytion security and two factor authentication beyond username and password. Your data also sits in a secured data centre, with camera survellance, security 24/7, backup power, limited access control – far more than the physical workstation that sits in the office of someone who doesn’t use a virtual computer.

How does a virtual desktop computer work?

In the data center are a series of physical servers. These servers have lots of processors, lots of memory and are attached to lots and lots of replicated disk space. On these servers, we can create a virtual machine. That machine could start with 2 processors, 4 Gig of RAM and 250 Gigabyte hard drive. You sign into the virtual machine every day, do your work, and sign out at the end of the day. Since the hard drives are replicated in real time, you are ALWAYS backed up. If you need more disk space, we simply allocate more (say another 250 GB) and now you have 500 GB. Need more processing power? No problem – we’ll add more processors. Just hired a new person? We can spin up a new machine is a matter of seconds. Want to know more? Give us a call.

Do virtual comptuers need virus protection?

If the virtual computer is connected to the Internet, yes. Any computer, regardless of operating system, whether virtual or no, needs to be protected from Malware (which covers viruses, ransomware, trojans, etc.). It is estimated that almost 50% of ALL attacks are directed at small businesses. Why? becuase they typically have no protections in place and are an easy target. Regardless of what you do, ensure that you use some fore of Malware prevention. Call us to learn more.
